Best Time to Fish Henties Bay: Conditions Beat the Calendar
The useful answer is not “come in one magic month.” It is knowing what the water, wind, tide and target species are doing when you arrive.
If you are planning a fishing holiday in Henties Bay, start with this: there is no single month that guarantees good fishing for kob, galjoen or sharks. The Namibian coast changes quickly, and a good fishing day is usually the result of matching the right water to the right method.
What we look at before choosing where to fish
Our own planning is condition-driven. Before a guided day we consider the tide stage, wind direction and strength, swell height and period, water colour, beach access, recent fish activity and what species the guest actually wants to target.
Tide stage
Different banks and gullies fish differently as water depth changes. A spot that looks perfect at one stage of the tide can lose its shape a few hours later.
Wind
Wind affects casting comfort, surf shape and how easy it is to fish a stretch of beach effectively.
Swell
Height alone is not enough. Swell period and how the waves break on the bank also matter for safety and presentation.
Water & recent activity
Water colour, temperature cues and recent catches help decide whether to stay, move or change the target species.
So when should you book?
If your dates are fixed, book the dates you can travel and let the fishing plan adapt to conditions. If you have flexibility and a specific species is important, tell us that before you book. We can discuss the kind of conditions we would prefer and whether a multi-day window gives you a better chance to encounter them.

Different fish, different water.
Kob / Kabeljou
Kob are a major target for many visiting anglers. The better question than “what month?” is whether the coast is showing the water, banks and feeding activity we want. We may move along the coast rather than sit on a poor-looking spot simply because it produced fish last week.
Galjoen
Galjoen can suit different water and structure from a kob session. When galjoen are the priority, tackle, bait presentation and the type of water we choose can change accordingly.
Sharks
Shark fishing is a separate style of shore fishing with heavier tackle, different handling priorities and more physical fights. Possible catches can include bronze whaler, spotted gully, spierhaai and cow shark depending on area and conditions.
No guide can honestly guarantee the species, size or number of fish you will catch. What a guide can control is preparation, tackle, reading the coast and how quickly the plan adapts when the conditions change.
TIDE TIMES ARE NOT THE WHOLE STORY
Why a tide table alone is not a fishing forecast.
A tide table tells you when the water level is expected to rise and fall at a reference point. It does not tell you whether a beach bank is open, whether the water is clean or dirty, how strong the side wash is, how the swell is interacting with the bank or whether fish are feeding there.
For that reason, we treat tide information as one input rather than a promise. The same applies to barometric pressure, wind forecasts and water temperature: useful signals become more valuable when combined with what is actually happening on the beach.
Recreational fishing permits and rules
Namibia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources regulates recreational marine fishing. Anglers should use the current permit and harvesting rules rather than relying on old social-media posts or outdated permit prices.
